Most of the times, we use regular particulate filter to filter the contaminated air stream. As an example, we use furnace filter to remove particulates from indoor air. Unfortunately, the particulate filters do not remove the gases and vapors--the chemical pollution. In order to remove gases and vapors we have to use the activated carbon as pre-filters or as after filters. Activated carbon filters can easily remove the low concentrations of gases and vapors. For higher concentrations of gases and vapors, other types of removal processes have to be implemented.
