• Why most of the high efficiency filters are pleated?

The performance of air filter is directly dependent on the surface area and impinging air velocity. Most of the time, the space for filter or air duct is very limited. In commercial and residential environment the maximum duct size is 24x24. So the filter has to be fitted in this area to filter out dirt from air.

If we just use a flat sheet of filter with 4 sq. ft. area in this duct and pass say about 1000 CFM airflow then the impinging air velocity on the filter would be 250 ft/min. Now, if use a pleated filter in this space with a surface area of 48 sq. ft. (6 pleats per inch / 1 inch deep) then the impinging air velocity would be 21 ft/min.

So by using a pleated filter we essentially reduced the impinging air velocity on the filer by a factor of 10. Therefore by using a pleated filter, the efficiency of the filter increases as well as the pressure drop or resistance across the filter is lowered.
